MONTREAL – Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it would eliminate around 400 jobs at
its Windsor motor plant by cutting one shift of production.
Ford Canada spokeswoman Lauren More called the move a "realignment of
production" by the US automaker, and said that "the net loss of jobs
is about 400."
The cuts are
the latest bad news for Windsor, the Canadian auto capital across the river
from Detroit, Michigan. Earlier this week General Motors completed its planned
shutdown of a transmission plant in Windsor, eliminating 500 jobs.
Ford is the only one of the Big Three US automakers to avoid bankruptcy and
government bailouts but has imposed steep cuts in pay and benefits.
Ford is expected to close one of its three Canadian plants in 2011 but has
pledged to keep 10 percent of its North American production in Canada.
